" Drawings and Collages:
2020-2021: the Covid Years
"
The Covid year 2020 started in March. I quarantined at first, then the permitted leisure had me walk around the neighborhood, not too far. In the evenings I would wait feverishly for the7pm pots and drums concert...
Then I started writing a blog: twelve letters to friends or some friends or, maybe, myself to keep my sanity. Then I started fitfully drawing. These 2020 drawings are geometrical shapes that intersect, with colors lines and small colored patches mostly on toned paper.
THEN CAME 2021.
I went on drawing, but by then I had added pastels, sharpies and crayons to my toolkit. Very naturally, but strangely enough, the drawings came out as patches of bright and not so bright colors, hardly any straight lines and more curvy shapes. More freedom and far less geometry, a lot of fun drawing them, sometimes late at night. There was then, and still is, the rich influence of Silya Kiese, a sculptor and instructor at Art Students League who teaches conceptual art and thanks to whom I discovered many artists and sculptors I had never heard of. I stopped writing the blog closer to the end of 2020. I have not returned yet to oil painting, but I will.

Katia and colors
For Katia color is life and it has become the central focus of her paintings which have been influenced by the myriad of colors she discovered during her numerous trips to Africa, Asia, Pacific Islands, South America and India, which has a special place in her heart
